Easy pgn-fen-epd to diagram converter

To whom it concerns....

to help chess trainers, who are often faced with problem how to print out the tasks for their students, as for training and/or home-works, I decided to make a little program which converts .pgn, .fen and .epd files into diagrams. The trainer has to prepare files with selected tasks with or without solutions and can easily print them out as diagrams.

It is strictly provided for your private use, don't try to compete with TEX-giants/wizards.....

The package consist of two very small standalone (portable) programs - no installation needed, and run on winXP and win7 (hopefully on win 8 too - sorry I could not test it). Just unpack the archive wherever you want....

The first one - dg.exe - converts .pgn, .fen and .epd files into diagrams, provided these files contain legal FEN or EPD strings.

Usage:

dg [infile.pgn [outfile.rtf [cols]]]

or, simple:

dg

If the argument(s) are provided it could be none, one, two or three in this order. Of course, you may freely edit them in the program itself.
To navigate, use the Tab key, to confirm the entries, pres the Enter key.

The program produce an .rtf file a lightweight, minimalist one which can be edited, changed, printed, or converted to .pdf as needed. In the last case for producing .pdf files you may use very versatile packages as Adobe Acrobat, or light pdf printer drivers as from free Foxit reader or doPdf...

Some cautions:

To see the diagrams, you need to have the Chess Alpha true type font (included in the package). If you edit the .rtf file with e.g. Libre office you may experience some problems with font scaling. in that case, please install the included font which is modified to avoid this problem.

Due to the fact that the compiler is an Unix-port, the program shows some strange bahavior, as it cannot handle the NUMERIC keyboard as it should. So please use the main part of the keyboard and the main enter key.

The program uses relatively short file-names (WITHOUT SPACES), and is best if the files are located in the same folder as the program.

Please note that .epd files MUST have the exact extension .epd (e.g. testset.epd)

if needed it can convert very large .pgn files (e.g. for HeijdenIV with 76132 positions, on two cores, it needs only 3-4 second for the whole file - short files are converted instantly.

the second one scans the .pgn files for solutions (if provided)

Usage:

ds [infile.pgn (outfile.rtf]]

or simple:

ds

It creates an .rtf file.

Afterward you can merge the two files and print or convert into a single or separate pdf file.

The archive contains also a few .dll's needed for the programs to run - please don't delete or remove them.
