I've been going through Polgar's book "Chess Middlegames". He has
a section on the classical exchange sacrifice (rook for knight) on c3 by
black. I did a database search and found 1300+ examples and started
analyzing them. It turned out to be quite interesting, because it illustrates
very well the struggle between a white rook and black knight, with possible
compensation for black in the form of 1 or 2 pawns, pressure on the weakened
pawns, play on the weakened dark squares, and/or an attack on white's king.
Richard Hobbs, who studied this type of sacrifice with GM Nick DeFirmian,
got me interested in this sacrifice years ago.
