LONE PINE OPEN 1971-81. ChessBase:-
LONE PINE OPEN 1971-81
Louis D. Statham (1907-1983) invented medical instruments and became rich. He sold his house in LA to Hugh Hefner. It became the Playboy Mansion. Statham moved to Lone Pine, a village in the desert of California. He sponsored the Lone Pine Open from 1971 until 1981. Fischer's successes were a great stimulus. Kashdan became the director. 33 players carried out seven Swiss rounds from 14 until 20 iii 1971 during the first installment. Evans won and gained $1000. The event became a lot stronger in 1975. Soviet players participated for the first time in 1976. Petrosian won and got $8000.
Most of the later tournaments lasted nine rounds. Many grandmasters participated and the first prize climbed to $15,000. The event was boycotted by the Soviets in 1979, because Kortschnoj could participate. When Viktor came indeed he could not play a main role, after he lost two games in a row. Kortschnoj did win in 1981, despite the Soviet participation.
No tournament happened in 1982, due to Statham's illness. He died the next year.
