This original print edition of 248 pages is a modern classic. First published in 1985 for George Allen & Unwin, it was later republished by Gambit in 2002.

There are new chapters on proof games and solving competitions, as well as a large collection of new problems for readers to solve. Unsound problems from the first edition have been replaced, and errors and omissions corrected.
